With businesses forced to close and strict social distancing measures in place, COVID-19 has had a significant impact on consumer shopping habits.
The last few months have been an uncertain time for many, however for many ecommerce businesses, lockdown has had a seemingly positive impact.
Online sales reach record high
Data released last month by the ONS revealed that in April 2020, online sales reached a record high, making up 30.7% of all retailing.
This huge shift to e-commerce demonstrates the amount of people now choosing to shop online as a direct result of COVID-19. The boost in online shopping was observed across most categories, with the biggest growth taking place in household goods stores, followed by department stores and groceries. Clothing and footwear was the only category which took a hit, due to people staying at home and lower demand.
Clothing retailers such as Primark who have traditionally clung to more conventional models and rely completely on bricks and mortar sales, have suffered badly while retailers who already had a strong ecommerce platform in place have benefitted.
It’s unsurprising that the future of the British highstreet is so uncertain.
A lasting change…
While some believe that these are temporary trends, our new buying habits are unlikely to suddenly switch back to what they used to be, even after restrictions are lifted.
While digital marketers have been promoting a shift to ecommerce for many years, we are expecting the influence of online shopping to be greater than ever. Ecommerce is here to stay!
Businesses who can adapt to this change and leverage the power of online shopping will no doubt reap the benefits. Not only does ecommerce open up your business to a whole new global audience, you’ll also benefit from lower base costs, more accurate sales data, and an edge over competitors who have not made the switch online.
