Why Upgrade to Magento 2?
If you use Magento 1 to run your e-commerce business you’ll be aware that the software is nearing the end of its life. This is no doubt both a worrying and confusing time for online retailers. You’re not alone and we’re here to help!
If you’ve not taken steps to migrate away from Magento 1 then you need to read on. During the course of this article we’ll clearly lay out exactly what is happening and what actions you need to take.
When is the deadline?
On the 30th June 2020 Magento will end support for Magento 1. This means that the most important piece of software in your business will be unsupported after this date. You’ll not receive quality fixes, upgrades or security patches from this date. Click here for more information.
What happens after the deadline?
After the deadline nothing notable will happen to your website. Your shop will continue to function, and customers will still be able to buy your products.
However, you shouldn’t let this status quo lull you into a false sense of security...
What will happen if I don’t do anything?
While we’ve established that there’s no cliff-edge, there are a number of disadvantages to ignoring the deadline...
- Magento will stop releasing security updates for your software meaning that the longer your Magento 1 shop trades after 30th June 2020 the more vulnerable you will be to fraudulent transactions, website hacking and compatibility problems.
- Third party providers like PayPal are issuing warnings about the dangers involved in continuing on with Magento 1. The fact that payment providers are issuing this kind of warning should be of concern.
- You will not be PCI compliant meaning that your payment provider could start to refuse processing your payments. Without the ability to receive money from customers you no longer have an e-commerce website.
What are my options?
Unfortunately this means you need to consider completely replacing your website. There’s no way around this.
Your Magento 1 website is not able to be upgraded to Magento 2 as the two systems, while similar, are not compatible. A new Magento 2 website will need to be designed, built and hosted for you.
Magento 2 has been built to improve on the foundation of Magento 1, offering better performance, customisation and security. The admin interface has been given a face-lift and is much more modern and intuitive. You’ll be able to clearly assess the performance of your online store and improve those all important conversion rates.
Even though we’ve based this article around Magento 2, this is not your only option. Other e-commerce solutions such as WooCommerce are widely used and offer similar features...
Is there anything else to consider?
As outlined above, Magento 2 is not an upgrade from Magento 1, it’s a completely different system. This means that any extensions that you may have been using will need to be replaced. Common plugins such as those used for shipping, payment and marketing will need to be replaced like-for-like which may mean you need to repurchase.
Magento 2 is a resource-hungry piece of software meaning that your current website hosting may not be suitable for your new system. We can help you assess this.
